283 Pounds Of Food–That’s A Lot , Right?

March 31, 2009

oneineightblog-290I can remember participating in food drives since I was a kid in school. It seems like we were always being asked to bring in “non-perishable food items” for one reason or another. Usually, I’d forget until the day it was due and then ask Mom to hand me a can of something as I headed out the door. Oh, that reminds me… my apologies to those who received all of those cans of green beans.

What I don’t ever remember being told in school was what that can meant to the person or family that received it. The Akron Symphony participated in the League of American Orchestras’ “Orchestras Feeding America” campaign by collecting food items for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank before both of our March concerts. In all, we raised 283 pounds of food. That’s good, right? I really had no idea. I had to ask the Foodbank what exactly that meant to a person in need. I was surprised by Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank President & CEO Daniel R. Flowers’ answer: “221 meals!”

So the next time you hear of a community organization collecting non-perishable food items, please donate. You’ll be surprised how far that can of green beans will go.

Speaking of food… did you know that this year’s Fanfare dinner will include dishes made from Frank Sinatra’s own recipes? In addition to being the most prolific recording artist of the Twentieth Century, Frank was also quite the cook. He learned to prepare meals for large groups while traveling with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey big bands. His signature spaghetti sauce is still legendary among his former band mates.

Invitations for Fanfare 2009: Simply Sinatra will be going out next week. But if you’d like, you can RSVP online today! Or, make sure you receive an invite by requesting one here.

Until next week…
