Lakes Tour Set For July 15

lakes-tour2009-web-290The Akron Symphony Guild will hold its annual boat tour of beautiful and unique homes along the Portage Lakes on Wednesday, July 15, 2009. The “Lakes Tour” will depart between 11 AM and 12 PM from The Olde Harbor Inn on Portage Lakes Drive. Tourists will be transported to five amazing homes ranging in style from a “taste of Tuscany” to “accents of Arabia” via a fleet of pontoon boats. Upon arrival to each home, guests will receive a personal guided tour inside.

Tickets for the cruise are on sale now starting at $40 and include a light lunch. Captain (or Patron) tickets are available for $70 and include a brunch at one of the homes and a Lakes Tour 2009 commemorative suncatcher.

The Lakes Tour has a history of selling out, so it is suggested that tickets be purchased in advance by calling 330-836-5725. The 2009 Lakes Tour will also feature a raffle for a one-of-a-kind reverse painted glass bowl courtesy of C.S. Jonas Studio. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at The Olde Harbor Inn for $5 each or 3 for $10. All proceeds benefit the Akron Symphony Orchestra, Chorus, and Youth Orchestras.

Chorus Awards Scholarship To Amanda Hermann

johnmacdwinner-amandahermannCongratulations to Amanda Hermann, soprano, and winner of the 2009 John MacDonald Vocal Scholarship. Amanda was awarded the $1,000 scholarship last month by the Akron Symphony Chorus. Read on about Amanda:

Amanda Hermann, Soprano, is a native of Akron, Ohio where she recently received her Masters in Vocal Performance at The University of Akron. While studying under the direction of Dr. Laurie Lashbrook, Ms. Hermann has been afforded many opportunities in her short career. These opportunities include: Peggy in Godspell, Gelinda in the scenes from Too Many Sopranos, Concerto Competition at Alderson-Broaddus College, Fiordigli in the scenes from Cosi fan Tutti, Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, The Princess from The Extract of Opera, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Marschallin in scenes from Der Rosenkavalier, and most recently, Anna Murrant in Street Scenes. Along with performing on stage in various operas, she has also received awards for her vocal talents: Honorable Mention at National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), and as a finalist in The Orpheus Competition in Tennessee where she received the Bellini Award. She then received The Ruby Byrd Scholarship at Tuesday Musical Association Competition in Akron in 2007. Ms. Hermann was also a finalist in November 2007 at the 9th Czech/Slovak International Voice Competition in Montreal, Canada. 2007 also brought her a win in the University of Akron Concerto Competition where she sang with the University of Akron Orchestra. Her recent achievements consist of being a semi-finalist at the Orpheus Competition and placing 2nd in the National Society of Arts and Letters Vocal Competition in Marietta, Ohio. This spring she also received the J. Arden Yockey Scholarship from Tuesday Musical Association in Akron. This summer Ms. Hermann will be traveling to Taos, New Mexico to participate in the Taos Opera Institute program

Free concerts feature mix of patriotic, Broadway, film, and gospel music
Lock 3 performance celebrates American masters Ellington, Porter, and Arlen

Akron—The Akron Symphony (ASO) returns this summer to three area parks and downtown’s Lock 3 Amphitheatre as part of the orchestra’s annual series of free outdoor concerts. The ASO’s Picnic Pops series begins Monday, June 22 at Hardesty Park and continues with performances at Firestone Park on Saturday, June 27; Lock 3 on Sunday, July 5; and at Goodyear Park on Friday, July 10. All concerts begin at 7:30 PM.
