Akron Symphony Begins Season With Grieg’s Piano Concerto September 13

Akron—The Akron Symphony Orchestra (ASO) begins its 58th season with Northern Lights on Sunday, September 13 at The University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall at 7:30 PM. The concert is the first of seven in the ASO’s Classic Series and will feature Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto performed by Naxos recording artist, pianist Philip Thomson (The University of Akron). The title of the program, Northern Lights, refers to the evening’s Scandinavian-themed repertoire that, in addition to Grieg, includes Carl Nielsen’s overture to his opera Maskarade and Jean Siblelius’ second symphony.

Lees Wins Rising Artist Award

c_lees_webbioCongratulations to Akron Symphony Associate Conductor Christopher James Lees! Christopher is the winner of the 2009 Arts Alive! Award for Rising Young Star Artist.

Watch for an upcoming feature about Christopher Lees and the other Arts Alive! Award winners in the October issue of Akron Life & Leisure magazine as well as in the Premier Section of the Beacon Journal on Sunday, November 1.

Arts Alive! is a biennial event where the Akron Area Arts Alliance recognizes achievement in and support of Akron’s arts and culture. A dinner and awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 15 at Portage Country Club starting at 5 p.m. Invitations will go out in October.
