Sgt. Pepper’s Preview on TWC

sgt-peppers-290 Classic Albums Live and the Akron Symphony’s March 27 performance of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is currently being previewed on Time Warner Cable’s Local On Demand channel 501. The 15-minute program, hosted by radio personality Jim Chenot (91.3 The Summit WAPS-FM), takes viewers behind the scenes of how this concert came to be with exclusive interviews with Maestro Christopher Wilkins and Classic Albums Live founder Chris Martin. The program also examines the enduring legacy of the Beatles as seen through the eyes of Beatles fan, collector, and local record store owner Scott Shepard (Time Traveler CDs & DVDs).

Time Warner customers can view the program by going to channel 411 and selecting “Beatles Symphony” from the menu.

AKRON—Downtown Akron will soon be transformed into the hip, retro world of the early 1960s, popularized by the award-winning AMC television show Mad Men, when the Akron Symphony presents Fanfare 2010: Circa 1960 on Saturday, May 15, 2010. The Symphony’s annual gala and concert will celebrate the style and music of the Mad Men era beginning with cocktails, dinner, and a selection of one-of-a-kind live and silent auction items at the newly-renovated Greystone Hall, aka the evening’s “Ultra Lounge 103.” After dinner, the Akron Symphony Orchestra (ASO) will join multi-talented actor, singer, composer, and entertainer Michael Andrew for a concert at the Akron Civic Theatre featuring the music of such 60s icons as Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, and many others. ClevelandClassical.com recently chatted with our guest artist for this Saturday’s concert, Liam Teague.

DH: How did the concerto originate in the first place — was it your idea or the composer’s?

LT: It was the composer’s. I’m a professor at Northern Illinois University, but I also have my bachelor’s and master’s degrees here. Jan Bach heard me perform, and I guess he was impressed enough to write a concerto for me in 1994. I premiered it with the Chicago Sinfonietta and recorded the piece with the Czech National Symphony.
