Akron Symphony Associate Conductor Lees Resigns

March 24, 2010

AKRON— Akron Symphony Orchestra (ASO) Associate Conductor Christopher James Lees, who also serves as the Music Director of the Akron Youth Symphony, has announced that he is resigning his position at the conclusion of June, 2010. Lees, who for the past year has divided his time between duties for the Akron Symphony Orchestra and The University of Michigan as Interim Director of Orchestras, stated in a letter to ASO Music Director Christopher Wilkins that: “With expanding career opportunities appearing more frequently, increasing offers for guest conducting with orchestras, and the prospect of another year residing outside the state of Ohio, fulfillment of my current obligations with GAMA (Greater Akron Musical Association) is no longer possible following this season.” Lees has been Associate Conductor for the ASO and Music Director of the Akron Youth Symphony for three years. CC.com Previews Sgt. Pepper’s Concert

March 23, 2010

Our friends over at ClevelandClassical.com recently caught up with Classic Albums Live founder Craig Martin to talk a bit about his groups’ upcoming performance of The Beatles’ classic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with the Akron Symphony.

Craig Martin: We started performing with orchestras in 2006. Our first time was with the Orlando Philharmonic, and since then we have worked with many boutique orchestras,
but having a full 35-piece orchestra is incredible. We are all rock musicians from club backgrounds, but the first time we got on stage with an orchestra, we were all blown away by the amount of sound they were able to pump out behind us. I think the Beatles is a perfect match for [orchestras] because we are not thrashing about with the Beatles, there is a lot of finesse and the music can really breathe. So I really enjoy playing with an orchestra, it is something I want to want to move further with the other programs. I think this concert with the Akron Symphony is going to be another testament as to how great a marriage it can be.
