Youth Orchestra Auditions Announced
April 9, 2010
The Akron Youth Orchestras (Akron Youth Symphony and Greater Akron Youth Philharmonic) will hold auditions for the 2010-2011 season May 21-24 at The University of Akron’s Guzzetta Hall.
The Akron Youth Orchestras give students from all over Northeastern Ohio focused musical training and exposure to the greatest of orchestral literature. While rehearsals are framed within a fun and energetic environment, and with numerous opportunities to work with professional Akron Symphony Orchestra musicians, the Akron Youth Orchestras present multiple concerts a year and continue the tradition of creating great art with the next generation.
During the audition process, candidates will be asked to play two contrasting piece3s of their choice that demonstrate their current skill level. Successful candidates will exhibit the following skills: strong sense of rhythm, intonation, sight-reading and mastery of scales. Musicality, including tone, dynamic variety, articulation, range and shifting, breathing and bow use will also be evaluated. The deadline for applications is April 26 and there is a $15 nonrefundable application fee. The Greater Akron Youth Philharmonic is the training orchestra for the Akron Youth Symphony. Those who do not qualify for the Akron Youth Symphony may be considered for the Youth Philharmonic
The Akron Youth Orchestras are open to middle and high school students from any county and are selected by audition in May and September of each season. All participants receive free tickets to all Akron Symphony Orchestra performances.
Beginning with the 2010-2011 season, Akron Youth Orchestras will join Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO) and other youth orchestras across the country in requiring all Akron Youth Orchestra (both AYS and AYP) musicians enrolled in schools with music programs to participate in their school music programs. This is an important statement of support for school music programs which serve a broad range of students with varying levels of ability. This policy can be waived if a student has an academic scheduling conflict with a required class that cannot be resolved.
Interested parties may download applications and information, including requirements for specific instruments here or by calling the Akron Symphony office at 330-535-8131.
