Akron Symphony Youth Ensembles Come Together For Concert March 12 In Medina
First Mabel L. Graham Scholarship Recognition to be held prior to concert start at 6:15 PM
“Arts In Stark’s” Robert Hankins to deliver keynote
Akron—The Akron Youth Symphony (AYS) will perform side-by-side with the Akron Youth Philharmonic (AYP) on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Medina Performing Arts Center (851 Weymouth Road, Medina) at 7:30 PM. AYS Music Director Levi Hammer will share the podium with AYP Directors Thomas Resnick and Damon Conn. The free concert will include Wagner’s Rienzi Overture and Berlioz’s March to the Scaffold performed by the Akron Youth Philharmonic, and the Radetzky March by Strauss, and Dvorak’s 8th Symphony performed by the Akron Youth Symphony. The ensembles will come together for a finale composed of Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever, Duke Ellington’s Duke Ellington, and “Berceuse” and “Finale” from Stravinsky’s Firebird.

Akron—The Akron Symphony Orchestra (ASO) will be joined by Cleveland International Piano Competition winner (2009) Martina Filjak for All Rachmaninoff, Saturday, March 5, at the University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall at 8:00 PM.
The concert will include three varied pieces by Russian pianist/composer Sergei Rachmaninoff: Vocalise for orchestra; his enduring second piano concerto, featuring Filjak as soloist; and Symphonic Dances, the composer’s final work.
Music Director Christopher Wilkins will share the podium with ASO Assistant Conductor Levi Hammer, who will lead the orchestra for Vocalise. Read more

Musically I have tried to make sure that we not only include repertoire from the past but also some of the present. I try to keep an eye out for what is currently happening in the gospel music field, and try to be sure that is brought to the discussion table. I think that Maestro Wilkins has a knack for choosing some of the most beautiful classical pieces for chorus that I have heard. He really knows how to couple the classical with the gospel. I do think it is the growing of the community where the evolution is most apparent.
