Angela Gwinn, soprano
Angela is pleased to be making a return performance with the Akron Symphony after debuting her Soprano Soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. She has performed with many opera companies and symphonies; performance highlights include Micaëla and Suor Angelica with San Francisco Opera, working with Kurt Herbert Adler during her first summer with the Merola Opera Program, a national tour of Micaëla with San Francisco Opera’s Western Opera Theatre, ‘An Evening of Rogers & Hammerstein’ with the San Francisco Symphony, 30 performances of Marguerite in Faust with the New Zealand Opera in Auckland, Micaëla with New York City Opera’s national tour – giving her a total of 60+ performances of Micaëla, Donna Elvira and Corinna (Rossini’s Il Viaggo à Reims) at Wolf Trap Opera, a Flower Maiden in Parsifal under Gian Carlo Menotti’s baton at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and performances of Brahms’ German Requiem with the Costa Rica Symphony and Berkeley Symphony.
While living in Akron, Angela performed the title role of Madama Butterfly, the Mother in Amahl & the Night Visitors, Bach’s Magnificat, Chanteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne, Lloyd Webber’s Requiem, Jenny in Company, Abigail Adams in 1776, as well as the Creation and Messiah.
She has her Bachelors degree from Northwestern University, and Masters degree from The Juilliard School while on a full-scholarship with the American Opera Center. While studying at New York City’s Lincoln Center, she sang in Master Classes with Luciano Pavarotti, Beverly Sills, Leontyne Price, Martin Katz and Mirella Freni. Angela was the recipient of a Richard Tucker Foundation grant, the Richard F. Gold Award from the Shoshana Foundation, and three Metropolitan Opera study grants.
Angela and her family are now living in the Charlotte area where she works for Goodrich Corporation and enjoys performing with the Charlotte Symphony. Following this evening’s performance, she’ll be heading to Boston for more Puccini!
