The Akron Symphony’s 2010-2011 season has been officially announced with season tickets on sale beginning June 14 NOW! Click here to order today.
One of the many highlights of the ASO’s 59th season is a staged production of the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (April 16, 2011), made possible by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. This ambitious project will be utilized to provide outreach to the Akron Symphony’s growing Gospel Meets Symphony fan base by way of discounted tickets and an open dress rehearsal for students. The cast will be a blend of professionals and amateurs with all but the top three or four leads being cast locally by auditions held in Akron. Plans are to combine the auditioned chorus with the Akron Symphony’s Gospel Choir to sing several of Gershwin’s “spirituals,” creating a combined chorus of over 200 voices—a power unlike anything heard in recent years in the opera house or in any of the touring productions. In all, the total complement of the production will feature approximately 350 performers, musicians, and stage crew.
The Akron Symphony will also present the Ohio premiere of On a Wire, a new work by 2010 Pulitzer Prize winning composer Jennifer Higdon and performed by the Grammy winning chamber ensemble eighth blackbird (January 15, 2011). On a Wire was commissioned by a consortium of orchestras across the country, including the Atlanta Symphony, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, the West Michigan Symphony, and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.
Other highlights of the season include All Rachmaninoff featuring 2009 Cleveland International Piano Competition winner Martina Filjak (March 5, 2011); Michael Cavanaugh, star of Billy Joel’s Broadway hit Movin’ Out, in a special Valentine’s weekend concert, The Hits of Billy Joel and More (February 12, 2011); and the Akron Symphony debut of guest conductor David Lockington leading the orchestra and chorus in a performance of Mozart’s Requiem.
Season tickets for the Classics and Pops Series are now available with several options for new buyers, including 50% savings and free tickets for children and students under 21 (Pops Series only). A flexible “choose your own” package is also available. Ticket packages can be purchased by calling the Akron Symphony ticket office at (330) 535-8131 or online.
