The Akron Symphony is proud to announce dates for the 2008-2009 season. The new season offers a musical medley of musical experiences, from Tchaikovsky to Mozart to Beethoven and beyond. With something for everyone, the season includes a variety of programming such as a Classical celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th Birthday; a swinging Pops performance of Frank Sinatra’s hit songs; and an out of this world musical Odyssey featuring the music and myth of the Star Wars film saga. Akron Symphony’s Fanfare 2008 To Honor “The King” With Concert In May
January 8th Kickoff Birthday Celebration at Three Akron Eateries
Akron—January 3, 2008—The Akron Symphony is proud to announce that the theme for Fanfare 2008 is The Ultimate Elvis Experience, an event which will culminate in a one night only concert featuring the recently crowned “World Champion Elvis Tribute Artist,” Shawn Klush, along with Elvis Presley’s longtime vocal backup group, The Imperials, live onstage at the Akron Civic Theatre on Saturday, May 17, 2008. The all-star concert will follow an Elvis-themed dinner and auction to be held at the Radisson Hotel earlier in the evening. Proceeds from the concert, dinner, and auction will benefit the Akron Symphony Orchestra, Akron Youth Symphony, and Akron Symphony Chorus.
Birthday Celebration Kickoff
To kick things off, the Akron Symphony has teamed up with area businesses and local Elvis impersonator Doug Wilson to celebrate what would be Elvis Presley’s 73rd birthday on Tuesday, January 8 with a travelling, day-long Elvis Birthday Celebration. The party will arrive “Elvis style” in a cadillac provided by Dave Towell Cadillac Saab and begin with a stop for breakfast at Caribou Coffee (1 N. Hawkins Avenue, West Akron) from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Caribou will offer customers an Elvis birthday discount on their gourmet coffee. During the afternoon, Spaghetti Warehouse (510 South Main street, Akron) will host a lunchtime party complete with a $5.99 lasagna meal deal from noon to 1:00 p.m. Finally from 6:00-7:00 p.m., Bricco (1 West Exchange Street, Akron) will offer diners a southern fish special fit for the King himself including a one of a kind banana and peanut butter dessert. All three location stops will feature free Elvis birthday cake courtesy of Tiffany Bakery & Ice Cream, photo opportunities with local Elvis impersonator Doug Wilson, and a chance to win free tickets to the May 17th concert starring Shawn Klush and The Imperials.

Carl Topilow to Lead Akron Symphony for Holiday Pops December 7
Concert to feature Akron Symphony Chorus, Wanda Hunt, TV’s Fred Griffith, and Santa
Akron—The Akron Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of guest conductor Carl Topilow (Cleveland Pops), will present the annual Holiday Pops concert on Friday, December 7 at E.J. Thomas Hall at 8 p.m. The concert will feature popular holiday favorites, from Rudolph and Charlie Brown, to music from Home Alone and The Polar Express. Akron-area vocalist Wanda Hunt will perform several selections with the orchestra and WKYC morning man Fred Griffith of “Good Company” will narrate The Night Before Christmas. The 130-plus members of the Akron Symphony Chorus will also perform with the orchestra throughout the concert. The concert will conclude with an audience sing-along and an appearance by Santa Claus.

Don’t forget to kick off your Akron Symphony Pops experience with our pre-concert Martini Tasting this Friday. You are invited to sample three different martini recipes, vote for your favorite (gin or vodka), feast on light appetizers, and register to win a free iPod nano. The tasting starts at 6:00 p.m. in the upstairs bar of the Akron Civic Theatre. A $5 martini special will be in effect for the duration of the tasting. Akron Symphony to Swing For Big Band Pops Concert
Jazz Trumpet Great Byron Stripling Will Lead Audience on Sentimental Journey
Return of Pops to ASO season includes: free admission for WWII vets; pre-concert Martini Tasting; iPod giveaway; oral history project and vintage motorcycles
The Akron Symphony Orchestra will present a tribute concert featuring the music of the Swing Era on Friday, October 12 at the Akron Civic Theatre at 8:00 p.m. Sentimental Journey marks the first return of Pops programming to the ASO’s regular season lineup in many years. Jazz trumpet virtuoso and vocalist Byron Stripling (Columbus Jazz Orchestra) will be the featured performer paying homage to the likes of Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller. The Firestone High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Sally Schneider, will also appear with the orchestra in several classic vocal arrangements.
A pre-concert Martini Tasting, a display of vintage motorcycles, an iPod giveaway, and free admission for World War II veterans make this more than a concert—it is an event.
